Past honorees have included WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan & Iraq, plus
peacetime Military & National Guard, Medics & Chaplains and, in 2007, Women in the Military.
Parade marshals are chosen from each branch of the service, and local veterans are invited
to participate and receive the honor they deserve.
The original Annville Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by the Annville American Legion for many years,
was discontinued after a decline in popularity. In 1991, Legion members, including V.Carl Gacono,
decided to revive the parade and the first hour-long event received much popular support. A few years
later, the date was moved to the Saturday before Memorial Day. The new parade continued to grow in
size, so in 1995, community leaders formed the Annville Community Activities Committee under Annville
Township sponsorship to organize the ever-larger event. A Memorial Service was also added after the
Saturday parade, in addition to the original American Legion program which continues to be held every
Memorial Day.
The annual parade has grown so tremendously that it lasts nearly three hours, and is now the largest
Memorial Day parade in Pennsylvania. Notable dignitaries have included Pennsylvania Governor Ed
Rendell (three times), a representative sent by President George W. Bush from the National Bureau of
Veteran Affairs, and military personnel from both nearby Indiantown Gap Military Reservation and
Washington, D.C. Featured music and entertainment groups have included the Quantico U.S. Marine
Band (participating twice), Zembo Shrine units, and professional & high school marching bands from
area communities and as far away as Washington, D.C. and Cape May, N.J. Numerous community and
service organizations, clubs, church groups and area businesses also provide floats, cars and marchers
to show their support for our veterans.
Volunteer support for the Annville Memorial Day Parade remains strong, and participants and
spectators alike eagerly look forward to parade day on the Saturday before Memorial Day. New
helpers and participants are always welcome, and the Annville Community Activities Committee is
always seeking the participation of more military veterans. If you would like to be part of this great
event or want more information, please call V. Carl and Mary Jane Gacono at 717-867-5511 ext. 306.
